7 Transgender Voice Feminization MTF Coaching Tips

Let’s face it, even if you look like the most passable girl or woman in the world, the moment you open your mouth and speak is the time you get ultimately read as male or female. If you want to have an easier time as a transgender female then you really owe it to your self to develop your female voice and avoid those award and mostly inwardly embarrassing moments of being recognized as trans just because of the way you speak.

During my transgender transition I researched and uncovered seven steps to developing my truly female voice, I wanted to share these steps with you. Seven of them work on the femininity but the eighth is a “secret” method that actually makes your voice SOUND female – not just feminine! (This is discussed further in the Kathe Perez video study course referenced below).

STEP 1: Pitch

Most people assume that the primary difference between men’s and women’s voices is Pitch. But we shall see that the actually difference in pitch between the sexes is minimal. In fact, the overlap of range between the sexes allows for almost ANY individual to fall well within accepted norms of pitch.

Pitch may be perceived as the most important factor for voice and subsequently gender identification. A strong marker for the perception of female voice is an average speaking pitch of 180 Hz in a range of approximately 140 to 300 Hz. The average non-transgender female pitch is approximately 225Hz while the average non-transgender male pitch is approximately 125Hz. A pitch range that is considered gender neutral generally falls between 155-185Hz. It has been demonstrated that increasing speaking pitch impacts the degree of voice feminization. [2]

STEP 2: Dynamic Range

Dynamic Range describes the difference between the highest highs and the lowest lows that a person uses while speaking. Men use a very narrow dynamic range, even though they are quite capable of extending that range. It is simply a matter of training, not physiology. In contrast, women use a much WIDER dynamic range, which is what gives their voices more of a “sing/song” effect.

Understanding the frequencies that are common in typical feminine speech patterns is critical to capturing convincing and favorable feminine voice patterns.

STEP 3: Enunciation

Enunciation is the way you pronounce your words. Just as one might do a dialect, there is a female dialect that transcends languages and cultures. The complete course gives you the understanding and training for developing a fully feminine enunciation.

STEP 4: Vocabulary

Yes there are masculine and feminine words. In our culture, certain words are almost exclusively reserved for males and others for females. Practicing the embellishments, inflections and nuances that characterize feminine speech is an important part of voice feminization.

STEP 5: Grammar

Being masculine or feminine has a lot to do with brokering power. When one forms words into sentences, the ORDER of words as well as modifiers and parentheticals change the position of power of the speaker. We’ll look into ways to adopt the “power level” appropriate to the many roles played by either sex.

STEP 6: Body Language

Body Language is they way you move while you talk. In fact, it has an actual impact of how the voice itself will sound. By using the proper Body English while you speak, you can improve the femininity of your voice – even on the phone!

STEP 7: Resonance

Resonance is the modulation of whatever pitch you have. It puts the envelope on the voice that takes the pitch and assigns it Timbre. In the course you will get exercises that anyone can do to find that special place in their voice and develop a truly FEMALE resonance. [3]

Contributors to vocal resonance include the length of the pharynx and size of the sinuses, which in transgender women who have undergone a male puberty are fixed in a larger size than with non-transgender women. [1]

Conclusion & Course Study:

No matter your imagined capabilities, speaking with a female voice is a skill that can be learned and improved upon with the correct training. Through a simple but systematic approach you really can achieve a female voice in only a few weeks, we recommend that you do follow the instructional videos and practice worksheets giving in the Kathe Perez course. 2. Thanks Val , the course is fairly expensive but within reach, just wanted to know if you have done her method yourself ?

    1. Hi Sam, I completed this course about 16 months ago and it helped me to develop my female voice, prior to using this, I tended to pass on good days but there were times due to laziness and stressful situations that I would drop back down into a more masculine voice. I like the way the course is structured and the video’s are easy to follow and you learn by stop-repeat technique. 🙂

  3. Thanks Val, well that gives me trust in this method, I tend not to buy things if I haven’t had feedback from actual people using them, I will go ahead and buy it from your link as you have had good results

    1. Yes, the results I had from this course were really amazing and it has transformed my feminine speech. I used to worry about speaking and inwardly felt everybody would know that I was trans, now I am happy to even talk to groups of co-workers in monthly meetings.

  4. Having completed the course I can say that this is one of those online courses that over delivers on results, Kathe is a certified professional in the voice feminization field, she has arranged the modules very nicely, the actual study is focused on helping you to really start speaking with a female voice. I was pleasantly surprised of the results to my voice, in just over 2 weeks, I had my friends comment on the change from gruff male to a passable female speaking voice. Yes, it seems a little expensive but in fact you get an amazing resource and the best thing is it works.

  5. I can vouch for Kathe Perez as she has really transformed my self confidence and ability to hold my head up high when talking. I knew that although hormone treatment and ultimately surgery would allow me to present as a woman it was my rather deep voice that would give me away in a heartbeat. This course is definitely worth using, the creator Kathe is specialized in coaching transgender patients and having now gone through this course which is designed to take beginner steps through to complete vocal feminization with audio, video, and worksheets. I know this works, I am living proof that going from my depressed state of having a deep masculine voice and now having a passable feminine one you can change and feel better about your self if you work at it.

  6. Thx for the article, I have posted this on Facebook for my trans girlfriends. Sadly, for me as a transgender man this does not seem applicable, is their anything like this for trans men and perhaps you could send me details, I am feeling a little left out. thanks again 🙂

    1. Hello Marcus, glad you found the article useful enough to share with your friends. In regard to your question; I do believe that Kathe Perez does do coaching for FTM trans men, get in touch with her via the website in citation [3] above. Hope that helps, let me know if you need anything more.

  7. I have had some voice therapy lessons from a speech pathologist. We worked on all of the things described in the article. For me, the most beneficial takeaway was moving the sound of my voice up into my head while projecting. For some reason that allowed me to pass especially on the phone.

  8. I am transitioning from male to female and I have a deep voice which only reinforces my gender dysphoria, I hate my voice so much, a friend send me the link to this article in a trans facebook group and after trying everything else it is time to try out the advice in your article and invest in an actual course rather than watching video after video on youtube and vimeo, these sites only make me more frustrated and withdraw deeper into myself.

I have heard from other trans girls in the MTF facebook group that the crash course has the best success rate of any voice feminization program, and I can see from other comments that this seems to be true, anyhow I have decided to give it a try and hopefully this will work for me as it has for others.

  9. I just saw this article posted on Facebook, I am about 2 years into my transgender journey and have been looking for good voice feminization tutorials for ages – just went ahead and got the program, now looking forward to going through the resources and start watching the initial videos over the weekend, thanks very much 🙂

    1. Hi Julie, transition is a big learning curve, you should aim to see a difference in your voice very quickly, you need to follow the week 1 exercises in the course which do wonders for your vocal chords and female pitch/dynamic range. All the best on your journey luv Val x

  10. I have been using the ’30 Day Crash Course’, voice feminization program by Kathe Perez for a little over 2 months now, I purchased it from your link, I am very pleased with all the things that are covered in this online course, it has really really helped me improve my female speaking voice, I struggled with being misgendered on the phone before I got this course and now I am passing, I feel so good when people say ‘Hello Miss!’.
I was pleasantly surprised at all the quality content, videos etc., and voice exercises, and learning material given in this course, their is really nothing that has everything included like this program does and it’s really easy to learn. Just wanted to say thanks for this article otherwise I might still be getting misgendered but now I am so so happy, thx. Mary 🙂 (I now have my female speaking voice)

    1. Thanks for the lovely comment Mary, we know that many transgender girls struggle with their voice, for some tgirls it’s ok for them to have a more masculine voice and they accept that fact, however for me personally I did struggle with being misgendered for years and this course really helped in being able to pass both in person and on the phone. Thanks Mary x

  11. Thanks for the article, I am transgender and have tried to train my voice to be more feminine, I did try the VoiceUp App but it didn’t really help me much and I was at a loss and feeling depressed that I was not getting forward with my female voice. I came across your article and found the information useful but most of all I clicked on one of your links for the 30 day crash course and it has completely changed things for the better, the course does work and now I am feeling that my voice matches my female appearance, I can’t thank you enough, maybe I would have found this at some point but you actually helped my quicker transition. Much love Karen.
